The Australian Journal of Botany is an international journal publishing original research encompassing all plant groups including fossil plants. Plant science areas covered by the scope are as follows: ecology and ecophysiology, conservation biology and biodiversity, forest biology and management, cell and molecular biology, palaeobotany, reproductrive biology and genetics, mycology and. Eleocharis (Cyperaceae) is a morphologically and physiologically diverse lineage of species with a cosmopolitan distribution. We here explore phylogenetic relationships in this lineage using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses of nrDNA ITS and cpDNA tmC-ycf6 and ycf6-psbM sequence data with the goals of comparing our phylogenetic hypotheses to previous classifications.

Taxonomy relies greatly on morphology to discriminate groups. Computerized geometric morphometric methods for quantitative shape analysis measure, test and visualize differences in form in a highly effective, reproducible, accurate and statistically powerful way. Plant leaves are commonly used in taxonomic analyses and are particularly suitable to landmark based geometric morphometrics. Analysis of 28 morphological characters supports the existence of two karyotypically defined species of Peromyscus on Vancouver Island and islands in the Queen Charlotte Strait and the Strait of Georgia. Morphology of insular and mainland populations from Washington and British Columbia is congruent with karyotypic data indicating that only the smaller, low fundamental number deer mice should.

Populations in mountainous areas of Europe and Asia (the Pyrenees, Alps, Carpathians, Balkans, Ural, Caucasus, Altai) can be separated as subspeciesaustriaca differing mainly by the stylopodium shape from the nominate subspecies.

Eleocharis subarticulata is recorded as the third species of Cyperaceae with a reduced chromosome number (n = 3), following reports on Rhynchospora tenuis (n = 2) and Fimbristylis umbellaris (n = 3). For Eleocharis, the numbers recorded to date vary from 2n = 10 to 2n = c.with x = 5 as the possible basic number.

Within all families, our analysis shows for both COI and 16S a general increase of the molecular divergence with the taxonomic rank. This would suggest that morphological taxonomy is roughly in agreement with DNA evolution.
